The Fourth of July is one of my favorite holidays. There's patriotism, there's kitsch, there are illegal fireworks... I mean... never mind, officer.
Growing up in Naperville, we got a little spoiled with fireworks tuned exactly in time with the Ray Charles, Springsteen and Neil Diamond jams on the Drive. Trying to duplicate those magical, softball and cartwheel-filled Fourths as an adult living in a city that houses Navy Pier is a challenge, but I've chosen to accept it.
This year, the holiday falls on an unfortunate Wednesday, making it extra hard to appropriately let freedom ring at night and go to work as a lady and a professional the next day. But instead of waving a white flag on the whole holiday, I plan to waive a red, white and blue one earlier in the day by hosting a few friends and family for a bountiful brunch of seasonal fruits.
Brunch is the best meal of the day, because breakfast makes you smarter and lunch is an acceptable drinking meal, so belt out some Lee Greenwood before the sun rises and get started with these American skewers, complete with a delicious doughnut (you can substitute a donut hole if you're, like, dieting or something). Fresh fruit is pretty much universally in season, so pick out your favorite raspberries, strawberries, blackberries and blueberries and stick it to 'em!
